Chapter 14

When Penny didn’t returned the first day, John hadn’t been worried. When she didn’t arrive on the second day, his men pulled him aside to discuss.

“Maybe we should take the hover-cycles and make our way to the Carolinas,” Ruxton suggested.

It was obvious everyone thought Penny must have succumbed to a zombie attack. Victor too, if they’d been together.

The idea of abandoning Penny didn’t sit well with John. If it was just his team, he wouldn’t care how long they waited. But they had Mrs. Valentine and Lexie to consider. “One more day. We’ll give them one more day.”

They set a perimeter on the lower level in a waiting area and moved a few of the kiosk around to section off a temporary camp. Vending machines had been raided for food and drink to see them through.

Now it was day three and the others were ready to head out on the road. Lexie was getting particularly restless with nothing to do and Mrs. Valentine’s face had grown more drawn with each day. John didn’t have any excuse to delay any longer. It was a little after four in the afternoon and they needed to leave before it got too dark to travel.

Lexie squealed in excitement, drawing their attention to the window. John’s heart skipped in recognition and pleasure at the sight of the CX-2 roaring through the sky. Penny was coming back.

The sleek black aircraft bucked and jerked in the air before beginning a rapid descent toward the ground that in no way appeared normal. John was no expert, but as he and the others watched through the large plate glass window, it was obvious the Tek-Fair jet was in trouble.

“Is it just me, or is something wrong with the way she’s coming in?” Granger asked in concern.

There was clearly a problem. John clenched his jaw until his teeth ached.

“Something’s definitely wrong,” Rux and Hickley said at the same time.

John couldn’t take his gaze away from the mid-air horror. What was causing Penny to fly like that? Had she been injured in New York? Or worse, had she been bitten while gone? If she was in between the changing process, what came off the craft wouldn’t be the two people he knew.

“Miles, you’re with me. We’ll greet them when they land.” When not if. John couldn’t allow his mind to venture to the idea of Penny crashing.

No questions asked, Miles rushed to John’s side as he hurried to the exit. The others stared but didn’t speak either. From their shocked expressions, John was sure they’d made the same connections he had.

Penny and Victor could be zombies. No one spoke the speculation aloud. There was no need to worry Lexi or Mrs. Valentina more than they already were.

Outside, the air was still hot enough this time of year that the heat burned down on the top of John’s head as he raced alongside Granger to where the jet would need to turn before entering the appropriate hanger. They dashed down the retractable metal stairs and waited.
